Delaware State Refund

This is the first in a series of articles about small towns. Naturally, I chose to start this series about my own hometown, Milford, Delaware, where I was born and raised and have lived (or worked in) most of my life. The idea for this article came from a conversation with my teenaged daughter who often asks, “Why would anyone come to Delaware?”

I have repeatedly pointed out that there is this big body of water bordering our state called the Atlantic Ocean which draws tourists, and frankly, that is the only thing most people know about our state (other than that they have driven through Wilmington while on Interstate 95 – for the record, those of us in Southern Delaware do not consider Wilmington to be Delaware and we believe the feeling is mutual for those living in Wilmington).

Milford is located centrally, about 20 miles south of Dover, the state capital, which is also known as being the home of Dover Downs, the site of two NASCAR races. The town is also located about 25 miles north of Rehoboth Beach, a popular resort community with a boardwalk and outlet stores. Because of the proximity to these tourist areas, Milford hotels and restaurants tend to get some of the overflow tourist traffic on busy weekends.
